About our company
At Positive Duty Workplaces, we don't just talk about compliance—we help you live it. Founded by Dr. Clare Bartlett and Darrel Trueman, our company was born from a shared vision: transforming Northern Territory workplaces into environments where safety, respect, and inclusion aren't just policies on a wall, but the foundation of every interaction.
With the landmark introduction of "Positive Duty" obligations—both federally under the Sex Discrimination Act and locally within the Northern Territory—the standard for workplace culture has fundamentally changed. It is no longer enough to react to problems after they happen.
Our mission is to empower managers and staff with the proactive tools needed to eliminate discrimination, harassment, and bullying before they even start.
Our ethos is simple: Prevention is a partnership. We combine Claire's strategic insight with Darrel's practical, hands-on expertise to strip away the complex legal jargon and replace it with actionable skills. We believe that when people feel safe and valued, businesses don't just "comply"—they thrive.
Through our custom four-hour workshops, we bridge the gap between "knowing the rules" and "knowing what to do," ensuring your team is equipped to meet their legal duties with confidence, empathy, and a clear sense of purpose.
Meet our team
Dr. Claire Bartlett
Drawing on her extensive background in education and reform, Dr Claire Bartlett brings a wealth of expertise and a healing-centred perspective to our Positive Duty workshops. Claire holds a Doctor of Philosophy and a Graduate Certificate of University Learning and Teaching from Charles Darwin University, as well as a Master of Education (TESOL) from Deakin University. Her academic foundation is further bolstered by a Post Graduate Certificate (TESOL) from Macquarie University, a Diploma of E-learning from Tropical North Queensland TAFE, and a Bachelor of Education (Primary) from the University of Melbourne.
This impressive array of qualifications ensures that our curriculum is underpinned by deep pedagogical knowledge and a sophisticated understanding of how adults learn.
As the lead curriculum developer for this workshop, Claire has combined her significant academic credentials with decades of practical, local experience to create a learning environment that is both legally robust and human-centred. Her career includes prestigious roles such as Associate Dean and Senior Lecturer, alongside being a published researcher and an Honorary Fellow at the Melbourne Medical School.
By moving beyond traditional compliance training, Claire’s approach empowers participants to not only meet their legal obligations under the Anti-Discrimination Act but to actively foster safer, more inclusive, and flourishing workplace cultures.
Darrel Trueman
Combining managerial leadership with decades of strategic communication expertise, Darrel Trueman is a lead instructor for our Positive Duty workshops. Darrel's career is highlighted by his significant role as the Superintendent of Curriculum at Freeport gold mine. There, he was a senior manager in a department responsible for overseeing educational frameworks and ensuring instructional excellence at scale for over 17,000 employees onsite. This deep background in curriculum design allows him to break down the technical requirements of the Northern Territory Anti-Discrimination Act into practical, engaging learning modules that are easy for workforces to apply in their daily operations.
A highly skilled media engagement professional and award-winning writer, Darrel brings a unique real-world lens to compliance training. He is a member of the NT Positive Duty Network, facilitated by the NT Anti-Discrimination Commission, and has completed advanced training in Anti-Discrimination, Harassment, and Bullying. His credentials include a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, as well as specialized certifications in Workplace Culture and Change, Cross-Cultural Training, and Managing Disrespectful Behaviour.

Darrel’s extensive experience in the Northern Territory—including his work as a Senior Media Officer at Charles Darwin University and as an A/Director of Communications for several NT Government departments—gives him a sophisticated understanding of the local professional landscape and the nuances of Territory-specific legislation. By combining his background in journalism with a healing-centred approach, Darrel helps organisations move beyond simple compliance to build relationship-driven cultures defined by respect, safety, and clear, professional communication.
